WKU Hosting High School Robotics Competition On Saturday

November 06, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Department of Engineering will host the 8th annual Kentucky Bluegrass Robotics Competition on Saturday (Nov. 10).

More than 75 students from 12 to 15 area schools will participate in the event at WKU’s Complex for Engineering and Biological Sciences. The competition begins at 9 a.m.

Using construction materials provided by WKU, teams build robots that must be able to pick up and move a variety of objects in a series of competitions with other teams’ robots.

The competition, which is the Engineering Department’s primary high school outreach effort, provides secondary school students with a challenging engineering design experience and secondary school teachers with guidance in teaching engineering topics.

Engineering faculty member Kevin Schmaltz is coordinating the department’s efforts, with faculty and staff Robert Choate, Chris Moore, Shane Palmquist and Ron Rizzo providing major support for this effort. In addition, more than 100 WKU engineering students have participated in the set up and execution of the event.
