Green, Ky. - The Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE) recognized two members of the Western Kentucky University community during its awards banquet Nov. 3 at the annual AORE Conference in Asheville, N.C.
Dr. Raymond Poff, a faculty member in the Recreation Administration program in the Department of Physical Education and Recreation, received the 2007 Jim Rennie Leadership Award, the highest honor given to a professional member of the organization. This award recognizes contributions to AORE which are far beyond the ordinary and which have had a significant and lasting impact on the association and its mission.
The award also recognizes professional work or leadership of unusual significance in the field of outdoor recreation and education. Dr. Poff served on the association’s Board of Directors for four years and served as the president for one year. He has chaired the research and publications committee for the organization, and has been responsible for helping create the annual research symposium. Two of his most recent accomplishments include creating a digital archive of conference proceedings, from 1984 through the present and helping create a joint journal between the AORE and the Wilderness Education Association which will be supported by the WKU TopScholar database.
Lora Curl of Brandenburg, a senior Recreation Administration major with a minor in Outdoor Leadership and American Humanics non-profit administration, was the winner of the 2007 AORE Student Literary Award. She received a scholarship to attend the conference, and presented an educational session on her paper “The Denatured Child: Counteracting Nature Deficit Disorder.” Her paper will be included in the 2007 AORE conference proceedings.
