Pre-College String Development Program To Offer Day Camp

May 25, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University Department of Music’s Pre-College String Development Program will host String Explosion 2007 June 19-22.

The day camp for Bowling Green area violin, viola, cello and double bass students ages 4 and up will be held in WKU’s Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center. Camp coordinators are Sarah Boronow, Jessica Boss and Angela Rex.
String Explosion 2007 will consist of morning and afternoon sessions.

The morning camp session will be for violinists only. Any child age 4-7 who has had at least one semester of lessons is eligible to attend. The class will be limited to 15 students, taken on a first come, first serve basis. The morning camp will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. with a final performance at 10:45 a.m. June 22.

The afternoon camp session will be geared toward students ages 8 and up, with the emphasis on learning in an orchestra setting. The afternoon session students will gain skills and improve their playing through a variety of activities including string orchestra, sectionals, group classes and outdoor games. The afternoon camp will be
held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. with a final performance at 3:45 p.m. June 22.

The cost of the camp is $50 per student which includes a camp T-shirt, daily snacks, music and instructor fees.
If your child is taking lessons for the first time and would like to participate in String Explosion, a minimum of four private lessons prior to the morning camp is required. Seth Gangwer, an instructor with the Pre-College String Development Program, is available to give private lessons this summer. For students new to the violin, the first lesson will include fitting the child for the correct size of violin so an instrument can be rented for lessons.
