Green, Ky. - A Western Kentucky University broadcasting student has won the television news competition in the 47th annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Awards Program.
McKenzie York, a Louisville senior, received a $2,000 award and qualified for the semifinal round of judging. WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting received a matching award.
After the semifinals, five finalists in radio and five in television will be selected to compete in the National Broadcast News Championships in San Francisco. WKU’s Brenna Gallegos won the 2006 national broadcasting championship.
WKU student Allison Vincent, a Bowling Green senior, tied for 14th in the radio news competition, the second of two contests in the Hearst broadcast news competition.
WKU finished sixth overall in the Intercollegiate Broadcast News Competition behind Arizona State, Brigham Young, North Carolina, Syracuse and Florida.
Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the Hearst program holds yearlong competitions in writing, photojournalism and broadcast news. WKU has finished in the top four nationally for eight consecutive years, winning the overall title in 2005, 2001 and 2000. This year’s final winners will be announced in April.
The Hearst program, funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, operates under the auspices of the accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. More than 100 schools participate in the program, which awards more than $400,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
