Green, Ky. - More than 140 Western Kentucky University students will be presenting their research work Saturday at Mass Media and Technology Hall.
“As part of the student engagement focus at WKU, these students have been involved in hands-on creative and research activities and they will be sharing their work through oral and poster presentations and display of their works,” said Dr. Sadiq Shah, associate vice president for Research and Economic Development.
The Student Research Conference begins at 7:30 a.m. WKU President Gary Ransdell will make opening remarks at 8 a.m. The all-day conference is open to the public.
“These students are the future workforce for our regional businesses,” Dr. Shah said. “This would be a good opportunity for regional businesses to see the talent pool and WKU’s capabilities in a broad spectrum of disciplines.”
Academic areas represented include chemistry, psychology, religious studies, graphic design, film studies, geography, physics, biology, public health, geology, electrical engineering, recreation, communication, mechanical engineering, history, karst water quality, English, middle grades education, philosophy, geomorphology, robotics, genetics, climatology, theater, biomedical, astronomy, art history, agriculture, nuclear physics, nursing, computer science, entomology, and anthropology.
“The conference would also be an opportunity for regional businesses to see how they can engage students in solving their problems with guidance from appropriate faculty members in their respective disciplines,” Dr. Shah said. “We want to interface WKU’s research capacity with the private sector to help create win-win solutions to help support regional economic development.”
Dr. William F. Carroll Jr., vice president of Occidental Chemical Corp., will be the conference’s keynote speaker at 1 p.m. His presentation, “Research Experience: A Differentiation in The Global Job Market,” will be followed by a panel discussion by WKU faculty.
Dr. Carroll was the 2005 national president of the American Chemical Society, is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, is a member of the U.S. National Committee for International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and received the Vinyl Institute’s Roy T. Gottesman Leadership Award for lifetime achievement in 2000.
The Student Research Conference is co-sponsored by Gordon Ford College of Business, Ogden College of Science and Engineering, Potter College of Arts & Letters, College of Health and Human Services, and College of Education and Behavioral Science, Sigma Xi Research Society, Academic Affairs and the Office of Research and Economic Development.
