WKU Students Honored In Regional Journalism Competition

Bowling Green, Ky. -Western Kentucky University’s student newspaper, television newscast and radio newscast as well as several students will be honored next month at the Society for Professional Journalists Region 5 Conference.

The Mark of Excellence awards will be presented at the SPJ Spring Conference on April 20-21 at the University of Louisville’s College of Business. First-place winners in regional competition advance to the SPJ national
contest later this year. SPJ Region 5 includes schools in Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana.

WKU Mark of Excellence winners include the following:

College Heights Herald, first place, Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper.
WKU News Channel 12, first place, TV Newscast.
College Heights Herald staff, first place, Feature Photography.
WWHR-FM News, second place, Radio Newscast.
Ashlee Clark, a Louisville senior, first place, Editorial Writing; third place, General News Reporting.
McKenzie York, a Louisville senior, first place, TV Feature Photography; second place, TV General News Reporting.
Joey Leslie, a Robinson Creek senior, first place, General Column Writing.
Wes Nolen, a senior from Erin, Tenn., first place, Editorial Cartooning.
William DeShazer, a Louisville senior, and Albert Cesare, a New Hope sophomore, second place, Feature Photography.
Joy Lewis, a Bowling Green junior, second place, General News Photography.
Jake Mitchell, a May graduate from Paducah, and Corey Paul, a Bowling Green sophomore, second place, Sports Writing.
Corey Paul and Andrew McNamara, a Bowling Green junior, second place, In-Depth Reporting.
Corey Paul, third place, Breaking News Reporting.
William Ploch, a Louisville senior, second place, Editorial Writing.
Nick Adams, a freshman from Friendswood, Texas, third place, Feature Photography.
