WKU Student Newspaper Wins 11 First-Place Awards

Bowling Green, Ky. -The College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky University’s student newspaper, won 11 first-place awards and accumulated the most points overall in the annual Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association newspaper contest.

Louisville junior Amber Coulter won the deadline writing competition with her story on dinner speaker Jim Waters, director of Policy and Communications for the Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions in Bowling Green. Louisville senior Will Ploch placed second in the deadline editing competition.

The awards were presented Feb. 24 at the annual convention in Louisville. The Kentucky Kernel at the University of Kentucky also had 11 first-place winners.

Mandy Mullins, a senior from Charlestown, Ind., was the top winner for the Herald. She placed first in advertising art and advertising copy and second in advertising design and house ads.

Other multiple winners were Michael Casagrande, a December graduate from Louisville, who placed first in sports headline, second in sports page design and third in analyses and special reports; and Mt. Hermon junior Samantha Bowles, second in ad campaign and third in advertising design.

In addition, first-place awards were presented to Jamie Sullivan, a senior from Scarborough, Maine, advertising campaign; Sara Holcombe, a senior from Vancleave, Miss., feature photograph; wkuherald.com for opening page and best overall website; Kat Wilson, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., and Jen Diehm, a sophomore from Springfield, Tenn., special section; Robinson Creek senior Joey Leslie, general interest column; and fall 2006 Herald staff, best feature headline.

Other second place winners were Wes Nolen, a senior from Erin, Tenn., editorial cartoon; Wes Watt, a December graduate from Bowling Green, opinion page; Bowling Green sophomore Corey Paul, sports news story; Jake Mitchell, a May graduate from Paducah, sports game story; Beth Wilberding, a December graduate from Louisville, best sports headline; wkuherald.com, inside Web page; and the photo team of Holcombe; Greg Barnette, a senior from Birmingham, Ala.; Nick Adams, a freshman from Friendswood, Texas; Louisville junior Christian Hansen and Josh Armstrong, a May graduate from Monument, Colo., photo essay.

Placing third were Shelbyville junior Samantha Hupman, personality profile; Louisville senior Ashlee Clark, best news headline; Hopkinsville senior Tavia Green, feature story; Barnette, sports photo; and Utica senior Phillip Erb, sports feature.

Nashville senior Layne Stackhouse won an honorable mention in analyses and special reports.
