WKU Presents High School Newspaper, Broadcasting Awards

Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists hosted its 27th Mark of Excellence Newspaper and Broadcasting awards ceremony March 8 at Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium.
Clint Brewer, executive editor of Nashville’s The City Paper and president of the National Society of Professional Journalists, was the keynote speaker. Approximately 300 students from 19 schools attended the awards ceremony.
The annual James L. Highland High School Media Adviser of the Year Awards were presented to Denita Hines, Bowling Green High School newspaper adviser, and Troy Benningfield, Taylor County High School yearbook, newspaper and broadcasting adviser.
Nineteen Kentucky high school newspapers and 16 broadcasting programs from Owensboro to Crestwood entered the 2007 competition. Schools were judged in three divisions based on student enrollment.
Best overall high school newspaper awards went to Monroe County in Class AA, Bowling Green in Class AAA and Trinity in Class AAAA. The best overall broadcast awards went to Henry County in Class AA, Hopkins County Central in Class AAA and Apollo in Class AAAA.
The most valuable newspaper staff member awards (overall for all classes) were presented to the following students: first, Josh Moore, Muhlenberg South; second, Britney Bruner, Breckinridge County; third, Julie Rosing, Bowling Green; honorable mention, Clara Pauw, duPont Manual.
The most valuable broadcast team member awards (overall for all classes) were presented to the following students: first, Philip Roper, Monroe County; second, Bekah Garr, Taylor County; third, Lauren Dillman, Waggener.
