Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University students are being asked to examine the phrase “Life, More Life” as part of a Department of Communication-sponsored oratorical contest.
The Ogden-Robinson Oratorical Contest is one of the oldest student competitions at WKU, the first contest on record being held in 1885. This year, competitors will be asked to prepare a three to five minute speech on the theme “Life, More Life,” a phrase that appears on the University Seal.
The oratorical contest will take place on April 12 with first and second round competitions occurring in the mid-afternoon. Three finalists will be asked to compete during a dinner for all participants that evening at The Kentucky Building. A panel of judges from the university and community will select a winner based on the most unique interpretation of the contest theme.
The contest winner will receive a $300 cash award. Awards of $100 will be presented to both the second-and third-place finishers. All speakers will receive Certificates of Participation.
“We invite students from all across campus as well as the Bowling Green Community College to take part,” Dr. Sally Ray, Communication Department head, said. “Public communication skills are vital in today’s business world.”
The 2006 Oratorical Contest involved approximately 40 students from multiple academic disciplines displaying the spirit of Western through oral discourse.
Registration is limited to the first 50 students. The deadline for registering is April 4.
