Bowling
Green, Ky. -“Over the Pond (and Back Again)” is the title of the annual spring concert to be presented by the Bowling Green-Western Choral Society, along with the Western Kentucky University’s Chamber Singers and University Choir, at 7:30 p.m. March 23, at First Baptist Church, Bowling Green.
Dr. Paul Hondorp, director of WKU Choral Activities and Choral Society Artistic Director, said the program title is very appropriate because the concert will feature choral music of American and British composers. The first half of the concert will be by the WKU Chamber Singers and University Choir, and they will be performing works by Weelkes, Morley, Handel, Barber, Whitacre, American folk songs and African American spirituals and gospel.
“Of particular note,” Hondorp said, “is Eric Whitacre’s ‘Cloudburst,’ in which the sound of a rainstorm is portrayed by percussion (bass drum and an instrument appropriately called a thunder sheet) and by the singers, who snap fingers, chant and slap thighs to imitate the sound of rain falling in the forest.”
Hondorp said that the two University groups would be joined by the BGWCS for the featured work “Gloria” by British composer John Rutter. It is a setting of the traditional Gloria text in three movements for brass octet, percussion, organ and chorus.
”The first and last movements are rhythmically energetic and powerful, the middle movement soft and subdued,” Hondorp said.
“Over the Pond” is one of several choral performances sponsored by WKU’s Music Department throughout the academic year. Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and $5 for students.
