'Cats In The Kitchen' To Premiere March 27 At WKU

March 08, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - “Cats in the Kitchen,” a musical piece written by alternative classical composer Phillip Bimstein for WKU professors Heidi Pintner and Michele Fiala, will have its world premiere on March 27 at Western Kentucky University.

“Cats, Coyotes and Cookware: Music of Phillip Bimstein” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. Admission is free.

“Cats in the Kitchen” incorporates the flute and oboe with recorded sounds (meows, purrs, cups and saucers, cracking eggs, hot skillets). The concert will feature Pintner, flute; Fiala, oboe; Bimstein, guitar; Angela Rex, violin; and Bill Scott, double bass.

The group also will present Bimstein’s “Lockdown!” -- a piece written for and about youth in detention centers -- and “Half Moon at Checkerboard Mesa” -- a fantasy for flute, oboe, frogs, crickets and coyotes.

Bimstein lives in Springdale, Utah, where he served two terms as mayor. His music has been performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, London’s Royal Opera House, the Aspen Music Festival, and on MTV. More about his work is available online at http://www.bimstein.com/index.html
