Green, Ky. -Although the enabling legislation was not enacted in the 2007 session of the Kentucky General Assembly, The Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky at Western Kentucky University will open this fall. Funding for the Academy was previously approved during the 2006 General Assembly to establish the program.
Preparations are under way for the start of the Academy in August 2007. The Academy will become the state’s only residential program for high school juniors and seniors who have demonstrated interest in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and marks the 14th such school in the nation.
Interest from both students and school districts has been high in this preparatory year. The Academy has been in contact with students and their families through more than 20 community information sessions throughout Kentucky sponsored by Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky Inc. Academy representatives have also discussed this opportunity for students with school administrators and educators through numerous presentations at professional conferences.
The application deadline for the current admissions cycle was March 15. The Academy will invite select students to WKU for interviews spread over the next several weeks. After reviewing the strength of each student’s application and gauging their readiness for the program, the Academy will accept 60 high school juniors and 60 high school seniors for admission in the first class of the program.
