Kell Elected President Of Fellowship Of Baptist Historians

Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Carl L. Kell, a Western Kentucky University communication professor, has been electedkell president of the Fellowship of Baptist Historians, an auxiliary of the Baptist History and Heritage Society.

Dr. Kell was elected during the group’s annual meeting June 8-9 at Campbellsville University.

The Fellowship of Baptist Historians includes faculty in religion, history, political science and related disciplines in American public universities, private colleges and universities as well as theological seminaries. Dr. Kell will serve for 2007-08.

Dr. Kell has written three books on the rhetorical history/takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention.

“In the Name of the Father – The Rhetoric of the New Southern Baptist Convention” (with L. Raymond Camp of North Carolina State University) (Southern Illinois University Press, 1999) was selected as Book of the Year – 2000 by the Religious Communication Association, a division of the National Communication Association. Dr. Kell and Camp were honored as Communication Scholars of their respective states (Kentucky and North Carolina) by their state communication organizations in 2000.

Next, Dr. Kell edited a volume of first person narratives from members of the Southern Baptist Convention, published by the University of Tennessee Press. “Exiled – Voices of the Southern Baptist Convention Holy War” (2006) is now in its second printing (2007).  Endorsed by former President Jimmy Carter, “Exiled” has enjoyed a spirited sales campaign.

Finally, “Against the Wind – The Moderate Voice in Baptist Life,” which is under review with the University of Tennessee Press, is the last volume in the planned series of studies regarding the rhetorical wars over the nature of the Bible and the future of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Dr. Kell has been with WKU’s Department of Communication since 1972 with previous instructional tenure at the University of Georgia and Texas A&M University.
