Green, Ky. - Two Western Kentucky University students are among six finalists competing this week in the 47th annual National Photojournalism Championships of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
Edward Linsmier, a December graduate from Saxe, Va., and Jonathan D. Woods, a senior from Maple Grove, Minn., are in San Francisco for the national competition. WKU students have won the Hearst individual photojournalism championship for three consecutive years and eight times overall (’87, ’88, ’91, ’92, ’96, ’04, ’05, ’06).
The photo finalists were selected on Monday from a field of 12 semifinalists. Winners will be announced this weekend.
Writing and broadcast finalists also are competing for Hearst national titles.
McKenzie York, a senior from Louisville, is one of five television news finalists in the National Broadcast News Championships. Last year, WKU’s Brenna Gallegos won the Hearst radio news national championship.
Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the Hearst program holds yearlong competitions in writing, photojournalism and broadcast news. WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting placed fourth overall this year, the school’s ninth consecutive top four finish in the national competition. WKU has won the Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Championship 16 times in the past 18 years.
The Hearst program, funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, operates under the auspices of the accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. More than 100 schools participate in the program, which awards more than $400,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
