Bowling
Green, Ky. - WKYU-PBS, the public television service of Western Kentucky University, received three
television Emmy Awards at the 43rd Annual Midwestern Regional Emmy Awards Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
WKYU-PBS’ senior producer, David Brinkley, was honored with two Emmys for his exceptional work in the Photographer and Lighting categories. A Student Production Emmy Award went to WKYU-PBS students Will Foster of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; Andrea Hummel of Nortonville; Alan Miller of Old Hickory, Tenn.; and Mindy Yarberry of Toledo, Ohio. The students, who major in broadcasting at WKU while working at WKU’s public television station, were recognized for their work on a segment for the WKYU-PBS’ magazine program, MainStreet.
“These awards mean a lot because the work has been judged by our broadcasting and production peers to be of the highest quality,” said WKYU-PBS Station Manager Linda Gerofsky. “We are so lucky to benefit locally from the outstanding and creative work of such talented staff and students. These are well-deserved honors and we are very excited and proud.”
This year, more than 600 entries were submitted for consideration from television stations and production companies in Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky, which make up the Ohio Valley Emmy chapter. Only 253 of those entries received nominations, with Emmy statues awarded to those who met or surpassed the highest average score.
WKYU-PBS received a total of five Emmy nominations in four categories this year. Staff members David Brinkley, Cheryl Beckley, Tony Noel and student Jessica Gibbs of Connersville, Ind., were nominated in the Magazine program category and the Community/ Public Service Announcement category.
Meredith Moore, a WKU broadcasting student from Evansville, Ind., received this year’s David J. Clarke Memorial Scholarship.
The National Academy of Television Arts & Science was founded in 1946. Since first being awarded in 1949, the Emmys have become the most prestigious and sought-after awards in television.
WKYU-PBS can be seen on broadcast channel 24 and on cable television systems throughout Southcentral Kentucky.
