State High School Speech League Has New Executive Director

July 30, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL), which has its headquarters at Western Kentucky University, is getting a new executive director.

Jim Turner, longtime newspaper editor in Russellville, will begin his new job next month. Turner also will be a full-time instructor in WKU’s Department of Communication.

Judy Woodring, director of WKU’s award-winning forensic program, had been KHSSL’s executive director for 19 years. With the growth of the forensic program and the addition of a National Forensic League regional office at WKU, Woodring decided it was time to relinquish the KHSSL duties.

Turner has a long history in speech and journalism. He had been editor of the News-Democrat & Leader for 11 years and spent more than 30 years writing for the paper. Turner taught speech, drama, journalism and English at Russellville High School from 1968-77. His Russellville speech teams won four KHSSL regional championships and finished as state runners-up in his final two years. He also coached the Logan County High School speech team from 1985-89.

Turner received his bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University and his master’s degree in speech education and Rank I in counseling from WKU. He taught speech classes at WKU from 1990-95.
