Bowling
Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University student chapter of the Society for Human Resource
Management (SHRM) was recognized as one of the 2006-2007 Top Ten Student Chapters at the SHRM Annual Student Conference on June 23 in Las Vegas. This is the highest award that a chapter can receive.
A total of 118 entries were submitted from more than 400 student chapters. Chuck Salvetti, manager of Student Programs with the national SHRM organization, wrote, “Winning this aware demonstrates that your chapter has done an outstanding job of providing opportunities for growth and development to your members.”
Brentni Henderson, an MBA student from Tompkinsville and WKU SHRM chapter president for 2006-07, was instrumental in preparing the documentation for the competition. The 2007 documentation package submitted for competition included professional development of the students; extensive support of the sponsoring chapter, Southern Kentucky SHRM; and information about student internships. Students also visit various local businesses, and attend seminars and presentations given by human resource personnel from the region to gain additional insight in their chosen profession.
In a special project this year, human resource personnel from the sponsoring chapter conducted interviews for senior business students and provided feedback to them about their interviewing skills.
The award was also evaluated on the services students provided on campus and to the community at large.
The students involved in WKU SHRM are eager to further their education in human resources, such as, seeking certifications in the field.
Brentni has been actively involved in the WKU SHRM Chapter and has held the positions of director, merit award chair and vice president before becoming president of the chapter, a position she will continue in while she completes her MBA.
