WKU Student Newspaper, Staff Members Receive KPA Awards

Bowling Green, Ky. - College Heights Herald staff members won nine first-place awards, and Western Kentucky University’s twice-weekly student newspaper placed second in General Excellence in the Kentucky Press Association newspaper contest’s college and university division.

Staff members returned from last weekend’s annual convention in Louisville with 23 awards in the 26 categories.

First-place winners were Amber Coulter, a Louisville junior, general news story; Beth Wilberding, a December graduate from Louisville, sports story; Ashlee Clark, a Louisville senior, headline; Nick Adams, a freshman from Friendswood, Texas, spot news picture; Justin Fowler, a Columbia senior, sports picture essay; Kat Wilson, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., graphic and front page; and Michael Casagrande, a December graduate from Louisville, sports page/section; and Danny Schoenbaechler, a Louisville senior, lifestyle page.

Placing second were Tavia Green, a Hopkinsville senior, feature story; Kelly Richardson, an Elizabethtown senior, and Coulter, on-going/extended coverage story; Adams, feature picture; Tyler Pelan, a May graduate from Louisville, sports picture; Nathan Morgan, a senior from Normal, Ill., sports picture essay, Fowler, special section; and Wilson, graphic.

Receiving third-place honors were Wes Watt, a December graduate from Bowling Green, editorial; Corey Paul, a Bowling Green sophomore, spot news coverage; Jake Mitchell, a May graduate from Paducah, and Paul, enterprise or analytical story; Jim Winn, a December 2005 graduate from Bowling Green, general news picture; Christian Hansen, a Louisville junior, feature picture; Greg Barnette, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., sports picture; and Casagrande, special section.

The Kentucky Kernel placed first in the division and the Murray State News was third.
