Green, Ky. - Child passenger safety technicians will be in the area to teach parents and caregivers the proper way to install child safety seats.
The South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC) at Western Kentucky University is partnering with Drive Smart Kentucky to provide technicians certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to check child safety seats for proper installation, for recalls and to answer questions. The service is being provided in recognition of Child Passenger Safety Week, Feb. 12-16.
More than 80 percent of child safety seats are not properly installed, leaving children at risk for death and injury. Properly installed safety seats are 71 percent effective in reducing infant deaths, 54 percent effective in reducing toddler deaths, and 67 percent effective in reducing the need for hospitalization.
Technicians will be at the following locations (local time):
Elizabethtown, Fire Station No. 3 on Ring Road, Feb. 6, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
