3 Schools To Benefit From Environmental Education Project

February 05, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Environmental education at three Bowling Green and Warren County schools will be getting a boost from Western Kentucky University’s Center for Math, Science and Environmental Education.

The WKU center has received an Educating for Sustainability grant of $111,748 from the Kentucky Environmental Education Council for the project at Parker-Bennett-Curry Elementary School, Warren East Middle School and Bowling Green Junior High School.

The center will provide the three schools with a variety of professional development opportunities and workshops as well as a new development initiative for pre-service teacher candidates.

“This grant gives us another opportunity to assist in integrating environmental education into the curriculum of local schools,” said Dr. Terry Wilson, director of the WKU Center for Math, Science and Environmental Education and a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. “Both aspects of this project will result increased student learning, more teacher involvement in environmental education, and sustainable environmental education projects involving teachers and their students.”

The participating schools and teachers will receive assistance in implementing environmental education into the curriculum and developing the environmental project. Each school also will designate approximately four lead teachers who will receive stipends for taking environmental education courses.
