WKU Religion Professor Available To Comment On 'Tomb Of Jesus' Documentary

February 27, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - A Western Kentucky University religion professor says the tomb featured in an upcoming Discovery Channel documentary is not the tomb of Jesus of Nazareth.

“While it is always exciting to read about new discoveries that might tell us something about Jesus, we must also realize that most such claims turn out, upon close examination by scholars, to be false,” said Dr. Joseph Trafton.  “Archaeologists have known about this tomb and its contents for over 25 years and concluded early on that it has nothing to do with Jesus of Nazareth.”

Dr. Trafton, whose academic credentials include an extensive study of the Dead Sea Scrolls, is available to discuss the feature documentary “The Lost Tomb of Jesus.” In the documentary, filmmaker James Cameron claims that the “Tomb of the Ten Ossuaries” belonged to the family of Jesus of Nazareth. The program airs Sunday night.

Dr. Trafton can be reached at (270) 745-5750 or at Joseph.Trafton@wku.edu.
