Recreation Administration Professor Receives National Award

February 13, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Steve Spencer, a professor in Western Kentucky University’s Recreation Administration program, was selected as the Frank Lupton Service Award recipient at the Wilderness Education Association (WEA) award ceremony during the National Conference on Outdoor Leadership held in Estes Park, Colorado on Feb. 7-11.

The Frank Lupton Service Award is given to a member who has been active in the WEA for at least 10 years, has contributed significantly to the success of the WEA, who does an outstanding job representing WEA, and has been recommended by at least three members of the organization.

Dr. Spencer serves as the affiliate representative to the association for WKU. His service to the association includes the Standards Committee and the Board of Trustees. He has presented educational workshops at the national conference every year since he became a member in 1990 and has written numerous articles for the conference proceedings and newsletter.

He also has donated his time and energy to support the association in its educational and fundraising efforts. When the association moved its national office to Tennessee, Dr. Spencer recruited WKU students to assist with the transition by helping move equipment, supplies and files. He also has taught 15 courses for the association.
