WKU Senior Working As Intern At Children's 'Defense Fund

February 07, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Stacy Hockett, a senior in Western Kentucky University’s Health Care Administration program, is participating in an internshiphockett at the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington, D.C.

The private, non-profit organization was founded in 1973 by Marian Wright Edelman and seeks to advocate for children’s health and well being on many levels.

Working in the health division, Hockett of Thompsons Station, Tenn., will be learning much about children’s health policy and the advocacy process as it pertains to generating support and political backing for CDF’s health proposals. The health division is working to ensure coverage for an estimated 9 million American children who lack insurance through the endorsement of their proposed modifications to both Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

“The tracking and analysis of current congressional legislation, monitoring of policy proposals and changes on the state level, and congressional hearings and Senate meetings are all aspects of this division’s work that this Western graduate will get to experience and learn more about while living in the nation’s capital,” said Dr. Charles Wainright, associate professor in the Department of Public Health and director of the Health Care Administration program.
