WKU Forensic Team Wins 17th Straight State Championship

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University Forensic Team won its 17th consecutive Kentucky Forensic Association State Championship Feb. 16-17 at Berea College.

The WKU squad swept all other competitors in the state and earned 11 state individual titles along the way. WKU placed first in overall team sweepstakes, followed by University of the Cumberlands and Berea College. In both large school sweepstakes and parliamentary debate sweepstakes, WKU placed first followed by Murray State University.

Barry Fields, a senior from Bowling Green, captured the pentathlon award for the competitor with the highest point total in five or more events. Fields also received the Harlan Hamm Award, which is presented to a deserving senior and voted upon by KFA member coaches.

Individual results are as follows:

Barry Fields, a senior from Bowling Green, pentathlon champion, tournament champion in informative speaking, second parliamentary debate speaker, semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Brian Bloss), third in extemporaneous speaking, third in impromptu speaking, third in rhetorical criticism, sixth in after-dinner speaking.

Seth Peckham, a freshman from Alden, Kan., tournament champion in rhetorical criticism, tournament champion in parliamentary debate (with Lauren Nelson), second in extemporaneous speaking, fourth in impromptu speaking, fifth in informative speaking, eighth parliamentary debate speaker.

Joelle Perry, a senior from Florence, tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking, semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Adam Heugel), third in persuasive speaking, fifth parliamentary debate speaker.

Benjamin Unanaowo, a junior from Union City, Calif., tournament champion in persuasive speaking, tournament champion in poetry interpretation, third in duo interpretation (with Ashley Litsey).

Lauren Nelson, a sophomore from Wheaton, Ill., top parliamentary debate speaker, tournament champion in parliamentary debate (with Seth Peckham).

Ashley Litsey, a sophomore from Hodgenville, tournament champion in programmed oral interpretation, third in prose interpretation, third in duo interpretation (with Benjamin Unanaowo).

Stephanie Youroukos, a senior from Harrisburg, Ill., tournament champion in after-dinner speaking, fifth in prose interpretation.

Jerome Davis, a freshman from Austell, Ga., tournament champion in prose interpretation.

Lydia Nelson, a senior from Carver, Mass., second in poetry interpretation, fourth in dramatic interpretation, fifth in pentathlon, fifth in impromptu speaking.

Keyon Shokraie, a senior from Somis, Calif., second in parliamentary debate (with Chad Meadows), second in impromptu speaking, third parliamentary debate speaker, fourth in extemporaneous speaking.

Benjamin Pyle, a junior from Harrisburg, Ill., second in rhetorical criticism, third in programmed oral interpretation, fifth in dramatic interpretation.

Kevin Cheairs, a freshman from Bellevue, Neb., second in duo interpretation (with Maggie Waid), second in prose interpretation.

Rachel Wigginton, a sophomore from Glendale, second in persuasive speaking, fourth in informative speaking.

Maggie Waid, a junior from Symsonia, second in duo interpretation (with Kevin Cheairs), seventh in dramatic interpretation.

Samantha Harrison, a freshman from Carrollton, Texas, third in poetry interpretation, fifth in rhetorical criticism.

Chad Meadows, a junior from Owensboro, second in parliamentary debate (with Keyon Shokraie).

Drew Horner, a freshman from Morristown, Tenn., second in informative speaking.

Jeffrey Boggess, a freshman from Hayward, Calif., fourth in prose interpretation.

Brian Bloss, a sophomore from Coppell, Texas, semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Barry Fields).

Adam Heugel, a junior from Rosenburg, Texas, semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Joelle Perry).

Ryan Brown, a sophomore from Morehead, sixth in informative speaking, sixth in rhetorical criticism.
