Dr. Robert Brooks To Speak At WKU On Feb. 27

February 05, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - What defines a great teacher over an average teacher? Could it be resilience, self-esteem, motivation and family relationships? Dr. Robert Brooks, who has presented nationally for the past 25 years to parents, educators and mental health professionals, will be discussing those attributes later this month at Western Kentucky University.

Dr. Brooks will speak on “The Power of Mindsets: Nurturing Motivation and Resilience in Students” at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at WKU’s Van Meter Auditorium as part of the Mary E. Hensley Lecture Series. Admission is free and open to the public.

Dr. Brooks, renowned for the warmth and humor he brings to his presentations, will provide expert guidance on the fundamental issues of motivation and resilience in children, building personal and professional self confidence, balancing demands of home and workplace, dealing effectively with stress, defining the characteristics of successful leaders and managers, and creating success strategies at work and at home that will last a lifetime.

He has authored many books, including his motivational book “The Self Esteem Teacher.” His work with the Governor’s Alliance Against Drugs received a Gubernatorial Award; as part of his contribution to the Alliance, he co-authored a pamphlet for parents to talk with children and adolescents about drugs.

Dr. Brooks also received “Hall of Fame” awards from both CH.A.D.D. (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders) and the Connecticut Association for Children with Learning Disabilities for his work with special needs children and adolescents, and the Outstanding Educator Award for Mental Health Education from the New England Educational Institute. In addition, Dr. Brooks has served as a consultant to Sesame Street Parents Magazine.

Dr. Brooks received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Clark University and did additional training at the University of Colorado Medical School. He is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and has served as Director of the Department of Psychology at McLean Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital.
