WKU Students Spend Semester With Nonprofit Organizations

December 06, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University students enrolled in a fall semester course, Rec 220 -- Introduction to Nonprofit Human Service Organizations, received a glimpse of the inner-workings of nonprofit organizations in South Central Kentucky.

The course content focused on nonprofit history, ethics, personnel and volunteer management, human development, programming, risk management, customer service, and careers; all essential elements to understanding nonprofit organizations. The course is a core component of the American Humanics (Nonprofit Administration) program (www.wku.edu/AH), in which students can work toward earning a national certification in Nonprofit Administration.

With the goals of increasing student familiarity with issues facing nonprofit organizations and engaging the students in the community, this fall’s course included site visits to several nonprofit agencies. These visits provided a practical framework for students to learn about the nonprofit sector. The content discussed by the local nonprofit leaders corresponded with the course readings, quizzes, and written assignments.

The following organizations participated in the course this semester: Girls Inc. of Bowling Green, Inc; Bowling Green Convention and Visitor’s Bureau; United Way of Southern Kentucky; WKU Career Services Center; American Red Cross of South Central Kentucky; Commonwealth Health Foundation; WKU ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships; Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana – Caveland Service Center; Community Action of Southern Kentucky; Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Kentucky; Junior Achievement of South Central Kentucky; and Friends of Lost River, Inc.

An online section of this course will be offered during the upcoming Winter Term Jan. 2-18.
