Bowling
Green, Ky. - Three Western Kentucky University students have received awards in the first photojournalism and writing competitions in the 48th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
Aaron Borton, a Crestwood senior, placed fourth in the category of portrait/personality, feature and “personal vision,” the first of three photojournalism competitions. Christian Hansen, a Louisville junior, placed 15th.
As a top four finisher, Borton will submit additional photos for the semifinal round of judging next June. Borton and WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting received matching $750 awards.
WKU, which has won the Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition 16 times in the past 18 years, is in fourth place behind Florida, San Francisco State and Missouri. Final winners will be announced next spring.
In the first of six writing competitions, Corey Paul, a Bowling Green junior, tied for 16th in the feature writing category.
Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the Hearst program holds yearlong competitions in writing, photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia with championship finals in all divisions except multimedia. The program awards more than $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting has finished in the top four overall nationally in the Hearst competition for nine consecutive years, including No. 1 finishes in 2005, 2001 and 2000.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program is conducted under the auspices of accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, and fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
