Green, Ky. - A Western Kentucky University civil engineering student has received national and state
scholarships in floodplain management.
Aaron Wallace, a Glasgow senior, is the 2007/2008 recipient of the $2,000 Nick Winters Scholarship, a prestigious national award from the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM), as well as a $500 scholarship from the Kentucky Association of Mitigation Managers.
The ASFPM is the largest floodplain management organization in the United States and has several thousand members. The Nick Winters Scholarship is awarded to one floodplain management student in the United States each year. Wallace will officially receive the award in May at the ASFPM national conference in Reno, Nev.
The Kentucky Association of Mitigation Managers scholarship was set aside this year for a WKU floodplain management student. WKU is the only U.S. school to offer a minor in floodplain management.
As a junior at WKU, Wallace passed the national certification exam for floodplain managers, becoming one of the youngest Certified Floodplain Managers in the United States. Most people who take the exam have college degrees and have been working in the field for some years. Wallace was one of 14 WKU students who passed the exam this year.
“Aaron is now permitted to write CFM after his name,” said Warren Campbell, associate professor of civil engineering. “The CFM is to floodplain managers as PE is to engineers, PG is to geologists, or CPA is to accountants.”
