WKYU-FM Earns Top Honors In Statewide AP Competition

April 11, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - WKYU-FM, the Public Radio Service of Western Kentucky University, has earned eight first place awards in this year’s Kentucky Associated Press broadcast competition. The news staff at the station earned a total of 18 awards in the contest, which was judged by professional journalists in the state of Wisconsin.

Assistant News Director Kevin Willis earned top honors in the “Best Special Series” category for a report on “Autism in Kentucky.” Willis also earned top honors for Class One radio for “Best Special Series or Documentary” for a report on the deployment of area soldiers.

News Director Dan Modlin won “Best Enterprise-Investigative Reporting” for Class One radio for a special report on “Child Pornography in Kentucky,” and he won “Best Public Service Reporting” for a series on rising tuition rates in the Commonwealth. Modlin and Willis both won first place sports reporting honors for stories on WKU’s move to I-A football and the Kentucky-Indiana All Star basketball game.

News Reporter Lisa Autry earned top honors for “Use of Sound” in Class One radio for her entry titled, “Drug Round-up.” Autry also earned a first place award in Public Service reporting for her coverage of the deadly “Choking Game.”

News Producer/ Morning Edition Anchor Joe Corcoran earned an Honorable Mention award for his report on ginseng poaching, a subject which he had covered with a report which aired nationwide last year on National Public Radio.

Modlin says the award-winning performance is an indication of the variety of stories covered by the public radio service. “By looking down the list of awards, you can quickly see that our staff generates a lot of story ideas. A large part of being successful in this field is recognizing what issues are really impacting the lives of people in the region. These awards represent a lot of hard work, and some creative approaches to doing our jobs.”

The awards were announced April 10 at a special presentation ceremony in Lexington.

Western’s Public Radio Service includes WKYU-FM in Bowling Green, WDCL-FM in Somerset, WKPB-FM in Henderson/Owensboro and WKUE-FM in Elizabethtown.
