Two Bowling Green Schools To Receive Seedlings

April 20, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - Two Bowling Green schools are TREERIFFIC!

Lost River Elementary School and St. Joseph Catholic School have been selected as Treeriffic schools and will receive free pine seedlings to distribute to students at each school.  Locally owned McDonald’s restaurants, the Daily News, WKYU-PBS and Western’s Public Radio are sponsoring the giveaway in celebration of National Arbor Day on April 27.

Each school was nominated by a representative of the school to receive the seedlings.  Trees come from the Kentucky Division of Forestry and include bags with planting instructions, all at no cost.  Students “bag their tree” to take home and plant.  All trees are native to Kentucky and require little care except watering.

Tiffany Meisel of Lost River Elementary noted in the school’s nomination form that “most students only experience the opportunity to plant items through school related activities.”  She added that the 800 students at the school “come from many diverse backgrounds and nationalities.”

Christy Stahl at St. Joseph sees this as an “opportunity to add to the Greenspace” at the school as well as a way to help students who are “currently planning on the development of an outdoor classroom.”  Students will also receive trees to take home and plant.

In addition to the Treeriffic School program, free trees will be available at area McDonald’s locations on National Arbor Day on April 27.  Trees are free and limited to one per person, available while supplies last.

This is the 17th consecutive year of the joint project between the locally-owned McDonald’s, Western’s Public Broadcasting Service and the Daily News.  Western’s Public Broadcasting stations include WKYU-FM in Bowling Green, WDCL-FM in Somerset, WKPB-FM in Henderson/Owensboro, WKUE-FM in Elizabethtown and WKYU-PBS Channel 24/DT 24-1 in Bowling Green.
