WKU Hosts Jordanian Scholar As Part Of Collaboration
April 20, 2007
Bowling
Green, Ky. - Dr. Fahmi Ghazwi, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Yarmouk University in Jordan, will visit Bowling Green next month to exchange ideas on collaboration between Western Kentucky University and Yarmouk University.
The session is conducted by WKU’s International Journalism and Media Management Training Program (IJMMT).
The May 1-4 visit is part of an ongoing effort by WKU to help strengthen the capacity of journalists to report on issues of interest and importance. The goal is to exchange ideas with WKU faculty, students and administrators to modify Yarmouk’s current radio courses to meet the needs of students.
During the visit, Ghazwi will work with faculty in WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting to develop new courses and modify current ones to help prepare Jordanian students for a career in media. The exchange will help invigorate the radio curriculum in order to meet the new challenges and opportunities of the Jordanian broadcast industry.
Ghazwi will also meet with President Gary Ransdell, Provost Barbara Burch and Dr. David Lee, dean of Potter College of Arts & Letters, to explore areas of exchange between the two schools.
Yarmouk University and the IJMMT built Yarmouk FM, the first-ever student-oriented radio station in Jordan, to give students hands-on experience in journalism and radio broadcasting. The IJMMT is a partnership between WKU and Internews Network.
The IJMMT is a program managed by WKU’s Department of Educational Telecommunications. This current program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) recognized the collaborative possibilities of WKU and Internews and was instrumental in bringing the partners together and in the continuing support for this program.
