WKU's 6th Annual Gift Of Music Recital Set For April 14

April 06, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Department of Music at Western Kentucky University will host its sixth annual Gift of Music Recital on April 14.

The recital, featuring 2006-07 scholarship recipients in solo and chamber works, will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. Admission is free.

A new scholarship awarded this year is the Ohm Pauli Chamber Strings Scholarship. Ohm Pauli was a member of the WKU music faculty from 1955-1982, serving as a voice teacher and director of the Choir and Madrigal Singers. His wife, Sue, and son, John, are supporters of this scholarship. The recipients of the Pauli String Quintet Scholarship this year are Jessica Boss of Canandaigua, N.Y., violin; Justin Stanley of Greenville, violin; Catherine Larson of Bowling Green, viola; Ashley Grueter of  Ashland City, Tenn., cello; and Amberly Bush of Bowling Green, double bass.

“It is always an immense pleasure for the students to be able to perform for the scholarship donors and friends,” said Dr. Mitzi Groom, music department head. “These scholarships have succeeded in helping the Department of Music attract talented musicians to our program as well as establishing a very high standard for musical excellence among the 170 music majors who attend WKU.”

The 2007 concert will feature a flute duet, vocal solo, brass trio, piano solo, clarinet/saxophone duet, vocal duet, oboe duet, harp solo, vibraphone solo and chamber strings. Composers that will be featured are Mozart, Debussy, Bach, Delibes, Yvon, Beethoven, Tournier, Glentworth and Telemann.

“This special concert brings much anticipation to our faculty and students during its planning stages, and great satisfaction to all on the concert evening when the communication between the donors and the recipients is either initiated or rekindled,” Dr. Groom said. “The WKU Department of Music faculty take pride in this recital through their participation in the planning, studio teaching, mentoring and attendance.”
