WKU Faculty Member, Alumni Honored In Photo Contest

April 18, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - A Western Kentucky University photojournalism faculty member and three graduates have been honored in the Southern Short Course Pictures of the Year national contest.

James Kenney, coordinator of the photojournalism program in WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting, won Best of Show, first place in Feature Picture Story, first place in Portrait/Personality and honorable mention in Feature Picture for photographs on the plight of women in Nigeria.

Kenney traveled to Nigeria last August with International Volunteers in Urology (IVU), a group of medical professionals that visited the Evangel hospital in Jos. The team treated women suffering from vesicovaginal fistula, a condition caused by having babies too young. More than 800,000 women in Nigeria suffer from the condition and become outcasts in society, he said.

Three WKU photojournalism graduates also were honored in the contest.

Rick Loomis of the Los Angeles Times received second and third place in Feature Picture Story, third place in News Picture Story and honorable mentions in Portrait/Personality and Sports Feature.

David Pierini of The Herald in Jasper, Ind., placed third in Sports Feature and Portrait/Personality.

Leah Hogsten of the Salt Lake Tribune received an honorable mention in Feature Picture Story.

The Southern Short Course in News Photography is America’s longest-running photojournalism seminar. For more on the winners, visit http://www.southernshortcourse.com/2007/07_winners.cfm
