Green, Ky. - Four Western Kentucky University students were honored last week at the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association 2007 National Conference and Recreational Sports Exposition in Minneapolis.
Three students received the William N. Wasson Award for outstanding student leadership and academic excellence in the field of recreational sports. The award is the highest given to a student NIRSA member by the professional membership.
Jordan Gardner, an Owensboro graduate student and a graduate assistant in Intramural-Recreational Sports, received the Wasson Award as a graduate student. She also received the Region 2 NIRSA Student State Director Award and the Region 2 NIRSA Star Trac Scholarship and Leadership Award.
Rosie Porecca of Bowling Green, Intramural Sports Supervisor, received the Wasson Award as an undergraduate student. He also received the Region 2 NIRSA Star Trac Scholarship and Leadership Award.
Caleb Wells, a Lawrenceburg senior and Outdoor Recreation and Adventure Center Supervisor, received the Wasson Award as an undergraduate student.
Adam McKnight, a graduate student from Rockwall, Texas, and Intramural-Recreational Sports graduate assistant, was selected as an All-American Flag Football Official during the National Collegiate Flag Football Championships.
Justin Anderson, a graduate student from Wills Point, Texas, and Intramural-Recreational Sports graduate assistant, was named Student State Director.
In addition, two staff members were named to committee chairs.
Stephen Rey, director of Intramural-Recreational Sports, was appointed chair of the Region 2 Student Excellence Advisory Board.
Derrick Hottell, sports clubs coordinator, was appointed chair of the Sports Club Committee.
Rey made three presentations: “Flag Football Officials Workshop,” “What’s New with NIRSA Flag Football” and “NIRSA Sports Officials Development Program Panel.” Hottell and Gardner presented “Assessing the Current State of NIRSA Sport Clubs.”
