Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting has placed fourth overall in the annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program, the school’s ninth consecutive top four finish in the national competition.
Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the Hearst program holds yearlong competitions in writing, photojournalism and broadcast news. WKU won the overall title in 2005, 2001 and 2000.
The top 10 in the 1007 Overall Intercollegiate Competition are Arizona State, Missouri, Florida, WKU, North Carolina, Penn State, Nebraska, Montana, Syracuse and Kansas.
WKU won the Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Championship for the 16th time in 18 years and will receive a $10,000 award and medallion June 8 in San Francisco. WKU finished sixth in the Hearst Intercollegiate Broadcast News Championship.
In the year’s final writing competition, WKU student Katie Brandenburg of Berea placed 15th in Spot News Writing.
Five WKU students – broadcasting student McKenzie York, a Louisville senior; and photojournalism students Edward Linsmier, a December graduate from Saxe, Va.; Carl Kiilsgaard, a sophomore from Corvallis, Ore.; Christian Hansen, a Louisville junior; and Jonathan D. Woods, a senior from Maple Grove, Minn., -- qualified for the national semifinals. The Hearst national championships will be held June 5-10 in San Francisco.
WKU students have won the Hearst individual photojournalism championship for three consecutive years and eight times overall (’87, ’88, ’91, ’92, ’96, ’04, ’05, ’06). A WKU student won the radio news competition last year.
The Hearst program, funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, operates under the auspices of the accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. More than 100 schools participate in the program, which awards more than $400,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
