Public Health Students, Faculty Attend State Conference

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University chapter of Kentucky Public Health Association took second place in the best student chapter award at the group’s state conference in Louisville.

WKU Public Health students and faculty presented four abstracts and 10 posters at the Kentucky Public Health Association Conference March 27-30 at the Executive West. WKU students had the most poster and abstract presentations at the conference.

Dr. Cecilia Watkins, faculty sponsor of the WKU student chapter of KPHA, and Dr. Grace Lartey, co-sponsor, along with Dr. Vijay Golla, Dr. Emmanuel Iyiegbuniwe and Dr. David Dunn, department head, represented the WKU Department of Public Health at the meeting. Dr. John Bonaguro, dean of WKU’s College of Health and Human Services, also attended and spoke at a WKU alumni social on March 27.

Poster presentations included the following:

“HIV awareness of Health Care Professionals in USA as compared to HIV awareness of Health Care Professionals in India” by presenters Jagdish Khubchandani, Srinivasa B. Gokarakonda and Pinakin Patel and faculty member Dr. Cecilia Watkins.

“Bridging the Digital Divide in Kentucky: Public Health Information and the Underserved” by presenters Carol L. Watwood and Pamela K. Jarboe.

“Are We Prepared for Avian Influenza?” by presenter Charlotte “Janie” Cambron and faculty member Dr. Vijay Golla.

“The Personal and Professional Health Behaviors of Public Health Educators” by presenter Jessica Diame and faculty member Dr. Thomas Nicholson.

“Environmental Aspects of Childhood Overweight” by presenter Lori Molden and faculty member Dr. Marilyn Gardner.

“Emotional outlets...a radical idea” by presenter Jennifer Leigh Jones and faculty member Dr. Cecilia Watkins.

“Implementing Health Promotion Programs in the Community Using Theoretical Approaches” by presenters Lauren Ahiatsi and Jennifer Fertil.

“Fundamental Instructor’s Training by American Red Cross in an institutional set up” by presenters Jagdish Khubchandani and Smit Chauhan and faculty members Dr. Cecilia Watkins and Dr. Steve Nagy.

 “A Win/Win Situation: Worksite Health Promotion Project Provides Community Student Engagement While Filling Local Businesses Needs” by presenter Candace M. Collins and faculty member Dr. Cecilia Watkins.

“An Internship that Improves the Lives of Employees at Western Kentucky University” by presenter Kathy Boka and faculty member Dr. Cecilia Watkins.

Abstracts presented included the following:

“Methodology of tapping worker’s perception of worksite factors influencing physical activity and nutritional habits” by presenters Crissy Rowland and Jagdish Khubchandani and faculty member Dr. Cecilia Watkins.

“Assessment of workers’ noise exposures at three manufacturing facilities in South-central and Western Kentucky” by presenter Dr. Emmanuel A. Iyiegbuniwe.

“Language Access Plan at TJ Samson Community Hospital” by presenter Juan F. Gutierrez.

“Preliminary Environmental Health Assessment of the Mayan People of Red Bank in Belize, Central America” by presenter Dr. Emmanuel A. Iyiegbuniwe.
