April 16, 2007

Bowling Green, Ky. - A graduate student in Western Kentucky University’s public health program has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Kentucky Safety and Health Network Foundation.

Jerrod Nelms, a Master of Public Health student from South Fulton, Tenn., will receive the 2007 Scholastic Achievement For Education (SAFE) Award on May 10 during the Governor’s Safety and Health Conference at the Galt House in Louisville.

Nelms, who graduated magna cum laude from WKU in May 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health Science, also received a SAFE scholarship as an undergraduate. “I feel very honored to have received this award on two distinct stages and at two different educational levels,” he said. “I am very well pleased to represent WKU in this manner.”

The scholarship will help Nelms pay for part of his educational expenses next year. After completing his master’s degree, Nelms plans to take a year off from school while his wife completes her master’s then he will seek a doctorate in epidemiology or international health.

Nelms serves as a graduate assistant in the Department of Public Health and has been involved in several research projects while at WKU.

The Kentucky Safety and Health Network Foundation awards scholarships and educational research grants to increase the level of occupational safety and health knowledge in the Commonwealth. SAFE Awards are presented in the disciplines of occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene and public health. The foundation is a sister organization to the Kentucky Safety and Health Network. More information is available online at http://kshn.net/
