WKU Research On Butterflies Presented At Conferences

- A faculty member and two students in Western Kentucky University’s biology department recently presented their research on butterflies at national and international conferences.
Dr. Jeffrey Marcus, assistant professor of biology, and graduate student Tia Hughes of Bowling Green attended the Seventh International Workshop on Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Lepidoptera on Aug. 20-26 in Kolymbari, Crete, Greece. Dr. Marcus presented a paper on the genetics and evolutionary history of buckeye butterflies, while Hughes presented a paper on the genetics and hybridization of viceroy and red-spotted purple butterflies.
Dr. Marcus and undergraduate student Brooke Polen of Bowling Green attended the 1st National IDeA Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellence in Washington, D.C., in July. Their poster presentation “Using Transgenic Butterflies to Study Wingless Signal Transduction” was selected from almost 500 posters to be featured in the “Transgenics and Knockouts” section of the conference.
