WKU Students Preparing For Winter Term Studies

October 12, 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University students and other people interested in getting more out of their winter can soon register for classes to be held during the University’s second Winter Term.

“Winter Term is a great way for students to get more out of their winter break, said WKU Winter Term director Beth Laves. “Taking classes during the Winter Term can help students avoid the need to overload their schedules during spring and fall to make their graduation date. Plus, Winter Term provides several unique opportunities to get more out of your education and reach your goals.”

Winter Term courses will be held Jan. 2-19. The University will be closed Jan. 15 for Martin Luther King Day. Students taking a Winter Term class will still get a two-week break at the end of December.

Courses for the 2007 Winter Term can be viewed online at WKU TopNet. Registration begins Monday (Oct. 16).
Students move toward graduation in a timelier manner than the traditional two-semester system by taking classes during Winter Term. The Winter Term gives students additional opportunities to take classes that are typically difficult to get into or crowded prerequisites to prepare for spring.

Winter Term courses are offered on the main campus as well as the WKU regional campuses in Glasgow, Elizabethtown/Fort Knox and Owensboro. Online and study abroad courses in countries such as India, England, Ireland, Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico are also offered during Winter Term.

More than 1,580 students took classes during WKU’s first Winter Term in January 2006 and 115 faculty members led 124 courses during the session.

“The 2006 Winter Term was deemed extremely successful,” according to Dr. Don Swoboda, dean of the WKU Division of Extended Learning and Outreach (DELO). “Student and faculty participation topped our expectations and support units did an outstanding job in sustaining those students and faculty.

“Faculty and staff showed tremendous creativity and positive service to the first Winter Term and we are excited about the 2007 Winter Term being even better.”
