U Of L Stem Researcher To Speak At WKU On Oct. 26

- A noted stem-cell researcher and neurobiologist will be the speaker for the 2006 L.Y. Lancaster-Hugh Puckett Lecture Oct. 26 at Western Kentucky University.
Dr. Fred Roisen, chairman of the University of Louisville Department of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology, will speak on “Do Adult Stem Cells Have a Therapeutic Potential? Only the Nose Knows!”
Earlier this year Dr. Roisen and his research team announced that lab rats with a spinal cord injury had regained mobility after receiving an injection of adult stem cells from a human nose that were transformed into nerve cells.
The lecture begins at 6 p.m. at the Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium. A reception will begin at 5 p.m. with a dinner following the talk at MMTH. Tickets for the dinner are $15. RSVP by contacting Dr. Bruce Kessler at (270) 745-4449.
Dr. Roisen received his bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University in 1964 and his master’s and doctorate from Princeton University in 1966 and 1969. He joined Rutgers Medical School in 1969 where he became professor and acting chair of the Department of Anatomy. In 1986, he was recruited by U of L to chair the Department of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology.
Dr. Roisen also serves as president of RhinoCyte, a company that he formed with other members of his laboratory to bring their scientific technology to the clinical arena.
