Bowling Green/Western Choral Society To Present 'Requiem'

October 06, 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Bowling Green/Western Choral Society, the University Choir and the WKU Department of Music will present Mozart’s “Requiem” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at First Baptist Church in Bowling Green.
Soloists are Jennifer Brennan-Hondorp, soprano; Cynthia Sprouse, alto; Robert Bracey, tenor; and Wayne Pope, bass.

Tickets may be purchased at the door. Cost is $10 for general admission, $8 for senior citizens, and $5 for students with a valid ID.

“Requiem,” which was Mozart’s last composition and perhaps one of his most powerful and recognizable works, is being performed as a part of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756. He began studying music at the age of 4 and performing at 6. The child prodigy was also an outstanding composer, writing his first symphony when he was 8 years old, his first opera at 12.

Although Mozart died in 1791 at only 35, he wrote some of the most important masterpieces of the Classical era, including symphonies, operas, string quartets and piano concerti.  Mozart’s death precluded his completing “Requiem,” and consensus has never been reached as to who, exactly, finished the work.

The Bowling Green/Western Choral Society is a campus/community partnership dedicated to the choral art. About 50 individuals from the community and three dozen WKU students perform with the group.
