Jim Wayne Miller Celebration Of Writing Set For Oct. 29
October 09, 2006
Bowling
Green, Ky.
-Western Kentucky University will host the 10th annual Jim Wayne Miller Celebration of Writing on Oct. 29.
The celebration, which begins at 2 p.m. (CST) in room 103 of the Garrett Conference Center, will feature a reading by award-winning fiction writer Pat Carr of Elkins, Ark. Dr. Carr, a former WKU faculty member, will read from her most recent novel, “Border Ransom,” and from earlier works. Her reading will be followed by a reception and book signing.
Finalists and winners of the annual Jim Wayne Miller writing contest will be announced.
The annual writing celebration was first held in 1997 in honor of Miller, a long-time WKU faculty member and well-known poet, fiction writer and essayist. He was a professor of German from 1963 until his death in l996.
He also taught summer writing workshops throughout the Appalachian region.
Professor Miller’s wife, Mary Ellen Miller, a member of WKU’s English Department, said this year’s event is special for several reasons.
“First, it is the 10th, which is always a milestone,” she said. “It also brings back to our campus a beloved former member of our department, Pat Carr. It also combines nicely with the 100th anniversary of Western’s founding and some very special English Homecoming events on the 28th.”
The event is free and open to the public.
