Latin American Student Association Presents Photo Exhibit

November 30, 2006

Bowling Green , Ky. - “Struggling Women in the World,” a photo contest/exhibit organized by Western Kentucky University’s Latin American Student Association, will be on display next week.

The exhibit is planned for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 7-8 at the Downing University Center’s first floor.

The student group’s goal is to create awareness of the culture of Latin American students and to promote unity in the Latin American community, according to Johana Lopez, LASA president and graduate assistant in the Center for Leadership Excellence.

“With the ‘Struggling Women in the World’ photo contest, we want to serve as a representative voice for the population of women through the exhibit of these pictures which were taken all over the world,” Lopez said.

“These pictures express women’s struggles all over the world and through these pictures we can be connected by what we have in common and what keeps us apart.”

The photo contest was sponsored by the WKU Bookstore, Center for Leadership Excellence and Office of International Programs and attracted 11 entries. The contest winners were:

First place: “Grief” by Teressa Rerras of parents of a 13-year-old girl in Afghanistan in grief after their daughter committed suicide. Many young girls in Afghanistan are sold into early/arranged marriages; this girl set herself on fire rather than marry.

Second Place: “Woman in Mozambique” by Sergio Salazar of too poor women collecting insects to eat and sell to other women.

Third place: “Under appreciated” by Micah Booth of a woman in the United States.
