Green, Ky. - Three Western Kentucky University students have received Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships for the spring 2007 semester.
Recipients of the study abroad scholarships are:
*Senida Husic, a junior biology major and University Honors Program student from Bowling Green, who received an $8,000 award to study with the Dubai Program, American Intercontinental University, United Arab Emirates.
*Brandon Johnson, a senior philosophy and religious studies major from Bowling Green, who received an $8,000 award to study at The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies, China.
*Christy Kibodeaux, a senior elementary education major from Greensburg, who received a $4,000 award to study at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan.
“This is one more example demonstrating that WKU students can compete successfully in national competitions with anyone in the country,” said Dr. Craig T. Cobane, director of the University Honors Program.
The students were assisted in their applications by Dr. Cobane, a national reviewer for the Gilman Scholarship, and Reed Vesey, director of WKU’s Study Abroad program.
The Gilman Scholarship is nationally competitive award sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education (IIE). During the spring 2007 application cycle, the Gilman Scholarship Program received 1,189 applications for 400 possible awards.
