WKU Forensic Team Competes In Tennessee, California

Bowling Green , Ky. - Western Kentucky University forensic team members traveled to Nashville, Tenn., and Stockton, Calif., to take part in two tournaments the weekend of Nov. 11-12.

In Nashville, WKU swept the Belmont/Carson Newman Swing Tournament, with George Mason University taking second and Tennessee State University going home with third place.

In Stockton, WKU’s debate team swept the top six placements in Lincoln-Douglas debate and captured the debate sweepstakes and the second-place overall award. Rice University was first overall, while California State at Long Beach took third.

Results from the Belmont/Carson Classic Invitational are as follows:
Kevin Cheairs, a freshman from Bellevue, Neb., tournament champion in dramatic interpretation, tournament champion in duo interpretation (with Stephanie Youroukos), second in poetry interpretation, third in prose interpretation in the Belmont portion; tournament champion in poetry interpretation, tournament champion in duo interpretation (with Stephanie Youroukos), second in dramatic interpretation in the Carson portion.

Kyle Fleeger, a sophomore from Mesa, Ariz., tournament champion in impromptu speaking, tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking, second in persuasive speaking in the Belmont portion; tournament champion in impromptu speaking, tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking in the Carson portion.

Jerome Davis, a freshman from Austell, Ga., tournament champion in prose interpretation, second in duo interpretation (with Benjamin Unanaowo), second in dramatic interpretation in the Belmont portion; second in duo interpretation (with Benjamin Unanaowo), fourth in dramatic interpretation in the Carson portion.

Lydia Nelson, a senior from Carver, Mass., tournament champion in programmed oral interpretation, second in impromptu speaking, third in after-dinner speaking in the Belmont portion; tournament champion in programmed oral interpretation, tournament champion in after-dinner speaking in the Carson portion.

Stephanie Youroukos, a senior from Harrisburg, Ill., tournament champion in duo interpretation (with Kevin Cheairs), second in after-dinner speaking in the Belmont portion; tournament champion in duo interpretation (with Kevin Cheairs), fourth in after-dinner speaking, fourth in poetry interpretation in the Carson portion.

Benjamin Unanaowo, a junior from Union City, Calif., tournament champion in poetry interpretation, second in duo interpretation (with Jerome Davis) in the Belmont portion; second in duo interpretation (with Jerome Davis) in the Carson portion.

Nick Courtney, a sophomore from Morristown, Tenn., tournament champion in persuasive speaking, sixth in poetry interpretation in the Belmont portion; second in persuasive speaking, fifth in poetry interpretation, fifth in informative speaking in the Belmont portion.

Rachel Wigginton, a sophomore from Glendale, tournament champion in rhetorical criticism, third in poetry interpretation in the Carson portion.

Micah Mason, a sophomore from Desoto, Texas, third in prose interpretation, third in informative speaking in the Carson portion.

Beth Berger, a junior from Lexington, second in after-dinner speaking, fourth in rhetorical criticism in the Carson portion.

Jessica Furgerson, a freshman from San Antonio, fifth in impromptu speaking, sixth in informative speaking in the Carson portion.

James Victery, a sophomore from Indianapolis, third in impromptu speaking in the Carson portion.

Adam Swanson, a freshman from Rosemount, Minn., fourth informative speaking in the Carson portion.

Maggie Waid, a junior from Symsonia, fifth in prose interpretation in the Carson portion.

Ashley Litsey, a sophomore from Hodgenville, sixth in programmed oral interpretation in the Carson portion.

Lauren Nelson, a sophomore from Wheaton, Ill., tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking, fourth in Lincoln-Douglas debate, semifinalist in parliamentary debate (with Chad Meadows), 18th speaker in parliamentary debate in the Paul Winters portion; second in persuasive speaking, second in prose interpretation, third in individual sweepstakes, fifth in impromptu speaking, semifinalist in extemporaneous speaking in the Mustang portion.

Keyon Shokraie, a senior from Somis, Calif., tournament champion Lincoln-Douglas debate in the Paul Winters portion; tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking, fourth in impromptu speaking in the Mustang portion.
