WKU Wind Ensemble To Present Concert On Sunday, Dec. 3

November 27 , 2006

Bowling Green, Ky.- The Western Kentucky University Wind Ensemble will present “Celebrations,” its second full concert of this season, at 3 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 3) at Van Meter Auditorium.

Admission is $5. The 70-minute program is diverse and will include a little something for just about everyone. Tickets will be sold only at the door.

The Wind Ensemble will perform the magnificent “March from the Symphonic Metamorphosis” by Paul Hindemith, “Eine Kleine Yiddishe Ragmusik” by Adam Gorb (sort of a klezmer band plays Scott Joplin) and Frank Ticheli’s touching tribute to one of his musical mentors, H. Robert Reynolds, titled “Sanctuary.”

As an added bonus the concert will feature two Wind Faculty solos with band accompaniment. Professor Lorraine Fader, WKU’s horn studio teacher, will perform the noble and beautiful “Nocturno” by Franz Strauss, and Professor Lee Blakeman will perform the last movement of a work that was commissioned by the Kentucky Music Educators Association and premiered at the 1996 In-Service Conference. It is named “T-BONE Concerto,” and the final movement is called “Well-Done.”

The program’s title comes from the other three works to be presented. First, Professor Eric Smedley will conduct “Celebration” by Philip Sparke, the noted British composer of wind band music. Second, Dr. John Carmichael will conduct two movements from H. Owen Reed’s “La Fiesta Mexicana,” one of the top works written for band.

Finally, the group will perform one of the dances from one of the recent WKU Centennial Celebration group of specially commissioned works, a wonderful and significant new musical art-work titled “Devine Days.”

The Wind Ensemble will be led by WKU’s internationally renowned wind conductor and director of bands, Dr. John C. Carmichael, and by associate director of bands and director of the highly acclaimed Big Red Marching Band, Eric M. Smedley.
