WKU Freshman Honors Student Publishes First Book

November 28, 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. - Western Kentucky University freshman Honors student Kaitlen Osburn recently published her first book, a collection of stories called “Java Dreams.”

The book was Osburn’s senior project at Page High School in Franklin, Tenn., and was published by RedLine Books of White Bluff, Tenn.

“Kaitlen Osburn is female, young, and southern,” said the Rev. Bill Barger of Dickson First Presbyterian Church. “Her stories in ‘Java Dreams’ show buds of potential that reflect Annie Dillard’s vision, Emmy Lou Harris’s voice, and Flannery O’Connor’s family dynamics and insight. We wait for work and time to bring the buds into full blossom.”

The book includes six short stories -- “Langleigh Soots,” “The Lighthouse,” “U.G.L.Y,” “The Butcher,” “The Family Business” and “Java Dreams.”

Osburn is pursuing a BFA in Performing Arts (Acting) and is involved in WKU’s theatre program. This semester she was in “Hansel and Gretel” and worked on the productions of “Puss in Boots” and “How I Learned to Drive.” She hopes to add a writing minor next year.

During the 2007 Winter Term, she plans to study abroad in London with Dr. James Flynn in a program called “Literary London.” She also hopes to spend a semester overseas studying theater and writing.
