WKU Geologists To Participate In Field Course In Utah

May 04 , 2006

Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Andrew Wulff, assistant professor in Western Kentucky University’s Department of Geography and Geology, undergraduate geology major Jeremy Abbey and geoscience graduate student Roger Scott will be participating in 40th Wasatch-Uinta Field Geology Course this summer.

Dr. Wulff is the past director of the six-week field course, which is taught by faculty from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Iowa, University of Illinois, WKU and Michigan State University.

The course, based in Park City, Utah, emphasizes field mapping techniques to develop geologic maps, construct geologic cross sections and address some of the practical applications of these maps. Students also compose detailed rock descriptions, measure and construct stratigraphic sections, and write reports and abstracts of their work.

Projects involve nine mapping exercises in the Wasatch and Uinta Mountain Ranges, trips to Grand Teton National Park and the San Raphael Swell, as well as field trips to other areas of geologic interest led by national experts. Top performers during the competitive course typically receive NAGT/USGS internships and further research opportunities.

WKU has sent five other students to the course over the past three years. “The affiliation of WKU with these major universities is important in demonstrating the strength of our geology program, and has opened doors for graduate opportunities and professional collaborations,” Dr. Wulff said.

“This is another example of the commitment of the faculty in our geology program to engage students in rich learning experiences beyond the classroom,” said Dr. Stuart Foster, acting head for the Department of Geography and Geology. “Participation in field camps, internships and other research experiences is a huge plus for graduating students seeking jobs and positions in some of the nation’s top geology graduate programs.”
