Six BGJHS Students To Host WKU TV Series On History
May 10, 2006
Bowling
Green, Ky.
- Six students from Bowling Green Junior High have been selected to host “This Week in History,” a series of television spots about history produced by WKYU-PBS at Western Kentucky University. The sixth and seventh graders competed in two rounds of auditions in April before being chosen as finalists.
“This Week in History” is a series of 90-second educational spots aimed at middle school students to teach them a little about American history. WKU students majoring in both broadcasting and history are key members of the research and production team for the series. WKYU-PBS is co-producing “This Week in History” with WKU’s History Department, with the goal of having the spots distributed nationally on PBS.
The primary purpose of this project is to acquaint elementary school students with events in American history that have relevance to their lives, not just events that adults think are important. This project covers from Columbus’ landing up through the 20th century. In each segment, middle school students will deliver a narrative relating the events of that week in history.
Production on four pilot episodes of the series will begin in June and is made possible through a WKU Provost’s Initiative for Excellence (PIE) grant. Further funding is being sought to produce the remaining 48 segments of “This Week in History” spots.
The six students from Bowling Green Junior High are: Deja Jackson, Allie Hanks, Amy Kovanda, Duncan Miller, Regina Saravia and Johnathan Beckner.
