Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Byron Sleugh, associate professor of agriculture at Western Kentucky University, has received the State Public Service award from the Kentucky Forage and Grassland Council.
Dr. Sleugh has been a member of the KFGC’s Board of Directors for the past two years and has been treasurer for the past year.
“The award is based on my service to KFGC in many different roles, my commitment to teaching in the area of forage crops and exposing our students to the great opportunities that exist in our state and elsewhere in forage-related agriculture,” he said.
Dr. Sleugh’s teaching and research activities include plant science, agronomy and forage management. He’s working with other researchers in the WKU Agriculture Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture on a project to apply poultry litter to forages.
Dr. Sleugh’s other work with the KFGC includes arranging two statewide grazing conferences hosted by WKU in conjunction with the KFGC and the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, serving as a speaker for the Kentucky Grazing Conference and Kentucky Alfalfa Conference and taking WKU students to state and national forage meetings.
“The exposure of our students to those working in the forage industry and successful, knowledgeable producers is priceless,” he said.
Dr. Sleugh, a native of Jamaica, has been at WKU since 2000. He began his agricultural training at the College of Agriculture in Jamaica and received his bachelor’s degree at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pa., and his master’s and doctorate at Iowa State University.
The KFGC, an affiliate of the American Forage and Grassland Council, works to promote the use of forages as profitable, economical and environmentally sound agriculture through education, communication and professional development of producers, scientists, educators and commercial representatives and through communication with policy makers and consumers in Kentucky.
